HAYLEY
WESTENRA'S ALBUM 'PURE' SELLS ONE MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE!!
New
Zealand's most charming and talented international artist
Hayley Westenra has sold over one million copies worldwide
of her album 'Pure'.
From
busking in the streets of Christchurch - to recording
her first New Zealand quadruple platinum album only
two years ago - to International Stardom with her debut
international album 'Pure' - Hayley has climbed the
ladder quickly
'Pure'
has been a tremendous success for Hayley, the album
is already 9 times platinum in New Zealand and was the
#1 album for Christmas in the New Zealand Top 50 Chart.
'Pure' has also broken the record for the number of
weeks a NZ album has been #1 in the New Zealand Top
50 Chart (15 weeks so far).
Released
in the UK in September 2003, 'Pure' rocketed into the
UK top 10 pop chart and made waves by becoming the best
selling debut album in the history of the UK Classical
album charts taking only one week to reach Gold status
(100,000). The album has now sold 3/4 of a million copies
in the UK alone! Hayley's stunning version of 'Wuthering
Heights' is being released as a single in the UK on
the 22nd March.
Hayley
has a gold album in Australia with 'Pure,' has just
completed extensive promotion in Japan and Asia; and
will be travelling to the USA at the end of January
for advance promotion (including a showcase in New York's
Times Square on the 27th January) for the US album release
on the 6th April 2004.
Hayley
returns to New Zealand in February for a National tour,

Webber's new musical "Woman in White" which
she sang with the musical's male star, Kevin McKidd.
For the evening's finale Hayley joined the other stars

On

November
4th 2003 - Hayley in the New York Times |
|
|
|
News
of Hayley's success is beginning to spread... today,
the prestigious New York Times published this article
about Hayley.
The
Voice of an Angel Takes Flight
By ALAN RIDING
Published:
November 4, 2003
ERBY,
England - Hayley Westenra is the stuff of dreams for
record companies gloomy over falling sales of classical
music. A bright-eyed 16-year-old with an angelic voice,
she is close enough to womanhood to secure ample coverage
in the girl-obsessed British press. Add to that, her
warm soprano voice has just turned her new CD, "Pure,"
into one of the fastest-selling classical debut albums
ever.
Decca Music Group, a British label owned by the Universal
Music Group, is almost breathless with excitement. "When
you're in the presence of beauty, it's not something
you have to think about," its publicity pamphlet
proclaims. "Whether it's aural or visual, or in
Hayley Westenra's case both, you tingle with the feeling
that your soul has been touched."
Those
words were written before her 13-song medley of ballads
sold more than 290,000 copies here in seven weeks, installing
"Pure" at the top of Britain's classical music
charts. (The album will be released in the United States
on April 9.) Now, with Ms. Westenra signed up for a
$4.5 million five-album contract, Decca may well be
tingling with the feeling that salvation is nigh.
In
contrast, Ms. Westenra herself has her feet planted
solidly on planet earth. This may be the high point
of her career, but she has been singing in public -
on the street, in musicals, in concerts, in talent contests
- for about as long as she can remember. Indeed, while
she is new to Britain, in her native New Zealand her
first two CD's sold 90,000 copies between them, with
"Pure" selling another 50,000 before its release
here.
So
even the limelight is a little old hat for this high-spirited
teenager. "I guess in some ways I'm used to it,
and I don't think about it too much," she said
in a twangy Down Under accent. "I just deal with
each thing as it comes. I've been invited to do the
Royal Variety Show. I don't go, `Gosh, what am I going
to wear?' I just think, `Right, I'll do it.' "

November
4th 2003 - Japan & Taiwan promotional tour - UPDATE
|
|
|
|
Here's
a special update sent direct from from Japan!
Hayley's promo trip is going really well. She is going
down a storm, the journalists love her and there is
a real buzz around her.
The
track "Amazing Grace" from Hayley's album
"Pure" features really heavily throughout
one of the most popular Japanese sitcoms called "Mezamashi"
and it has become an incredibly popular song in Japan
already. Hayley met the actors and actresses yesterday
which was filmed for a morning entertainment tv show.
"Mezamashi" is on the same scale as "Eastenders"
in the UK or "Neighbours" in Australia, and
people are starting to link the song with Hayley more
and more. For example, yesterday Hayley did a photoshoot
and the photographer didn't know who she was until he
was told that she was the voice singing "Amazing
Grace" on the sitcom. He was so overwhelmed that
he nearly started to cry and told her he watched the
show every week and he absolutely loved the song and
her voice. He kept on bowing on the ground which was
hugely touching for Hayley.
The
single of "Amazing Grace" has just been released
and its sales are really taking off after all her radio
performances.
Radio support has also been massive for the single,
especially considering it is a classical song (and there
are no classical radio stations in Japan). Hayley is
No.30 in the airplay charts but that was based on last
week so it should go up the charts this week.
Overall
it seems that Universal Music Japan and more importantly,
the people of Japan, are very excited about Hayley and
are really behind the album! Way to go Hayley!
PS Hayley fans in Japan mark your calendars because
"Pure" will be released on November 19th!

October
16th 2003 - latest update from Hayley |
|
|
|
In
between touring, travelling, performing and talking
to the press, Hayley has somehow found time to write
her latest diary update!
Hi
guys!!
How are you?? Sorry about keeping you waiting for another
update on what I'm doing, but as you can imagine life
has been a bit crazy!! At the moment we're driving back
to London, after last night performing with Aled Jones
in Llandudno, North Wales. I'm feeling a bit tired (and
a bit carsick!), as it was a bit of a late night and
then we had to get up quite early to get back in time
for a meeting, as it's a 5hr trip!
Anyway,
I'm having a great time over here in the UK. I'm joining
Aled for 8 concerts on his UK tour and so far I've performed
in Croydon, Basingstoke, Derby and Llandudno. Each concert
has been a big success and I've been thoroughly enjoying
myself! There's only one thing that we've been struggling
with......the road systems!! You'd think that, armed
with a map, everything should be pretty straight forward,
but somehow we always run into difficulty!!!
Oooh….guess what??! I now have a manager, Steve Abbott.
He’s such a lovely man and so enthusiastic, although
because of the huge workload that’s suddenly been dumped
on him he’s been getting around 5hrs sleep every night….I
feel so guilty!! I’m very lucky though!
Anyway, I better go. I’ll try and keep you updated!!
Love Hayley xxx

She's top of the classical charts, but does Hayley Westenra's
appeal lie in her ability or her innocent image
There has been no time to put the bouquet in water so
it lies by the kitchen sink. The detritus of female
teenager life spreads over the sofa: Heat magazine,

22 2003 - PRESS RELEASE |
|
|
|
UNKNOWN
16 YEAR OLD MAKES UK CHART HISTORY
A
little-known 16-year-old New Zealand girl, Hayley Westenra,
today broke all records with the fastest-selling debut
album in the history of the UK classical charts (The
Official UK Charts)
"Pure",
Hayley's debut UK release on Decca, has achieved higher
first week sales than such household names as Luciano
Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church and Russell
Watson. The album has gone straight in to the UK Pop
Chart at No.8 and is at No.1 in the Classical Charts.
Known
for the extraordinary purity of her voice, Hayley was
discovered busking in Christchurch New Zealand aged
11yrs, and was snapped up by record giants Universal
in New Zealand (home to acts such as Elton John, Daniel
Bedingfield, Eminen and Texas) for a 5 album £3million
pound deal. Her debut album went straight to No.1 in
the New Zealand pop album charts ahead of Robbie Williams.
Hayley is now marketed worldwide by Decca (part of Universal).
Hayley
has just performed with Jose Carreras and Bryn Terfel
in Wales, and she makes her UK solo debut at the Royal
Albert Hall in December.
"This
is amazing, unbelievable made all the sweeter by the
fact I'm living in London and loving every minute!"
Hayley Westenra
"Hayley
Westenra is an extraordinary young singer. In a world
dominated by presentation rather than content the purity
and simplicity of her artistry has created a sensation.
This young lady has arrived and is here to stay".
Bill Holland, Divisional Director Universal Classics
& Jazz
"Hayley's
talent, directness and yes, purity, have already made
her a star in her native New Zealand, Australia, several
Asian countries and now the UK. She is the real thing".
Costa Pilavachi, President, Decca

19 2003 - Special note from Hayley! |
|
|
|
I'm
really sorry I haven't given you an update for a while,
but I've been so busy lately with lots of promotion
and concerts for my new album 'PURE'! At the moment
I'm in London for the release of my album, which is
very exciting! A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity
to perform with Bryn Terfel and José Carreras
at the Faenol Festival in Wales which was incredible....the
whole time I was up on stage with them, I was thinking
"how on earth did I get up here?!". It was
such an honour and an experience I will never forget!
I
also performed at the Kenwood and Marble Hill 'Music
on a Summer Evening' concert, which was fantastic. It
was such a nice, warm atmosphere because everyone was
there just to have a good time! People brought along
picnic baskets, candles, tables and chairs...everything
except the kitchen sink!!
As
you probably know, I also had an awesome time travelling
around Australia and Asia!! I can now say I've been
to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Malaysia and Korea!! (plus Taiwan...which I visited
last year!!)
Doing
promotion in Australia was very exciting as it was the
first country I'd released an album in, outside New
Zealand. I had such a great time and hopefully I'll
be back soon! I'm so pleased with how it's doing....it's
always a bit nerveracking at first, releasing a new
album, so I'm thrilled that people are enjoying it!
I
also loved Asia -every aspect of it! Everyone I met
was so lovely and supportive. I was actually lucky enough
to visit a few markets which was cool and I bought myself
and the rest of my family a few souvenirs! I also have
to mention the food...mmmm delicious (especially the
tofu!!). A few people might know of the well-known nightclub
'Zouk' (apparently it's one of the top 5 nightclubs
in the world). Well, that's where my Singapore showcase
was held....so I'll be including that in my list of
prestigious venues I've performed in!!
Well,
I better sign off, but I just want to say a huge thank
you to everyone for all their support! I really appreciate
all your messages in the guestbook (which I do try and
read when I get a chance!) and I'm so glad that you
are enjoying my album!!
Lots
of love, Hayley xxx
